The CSU Smart Village Microgrid program (SVM) has been developing over the last four years, both as a faculty-driven initiative and, for the last two years, with significant assistance from the Vice President of Research office in the form of a Catalyst for Innovation Partnership (CIP) grant. The SVM effort aims to develop a cross-disciplinary approach to village development, by catalyzing development with grid based electrification. The program’s current target is Sub-Saharan Africa, where 600 million people are currently without electrification, often in very dire economic circumstances.
In the immediate term, this contract is intended to help the SVM program raise funds for further development and deployment of the SVM solution, including development of a business entity to drive commercialization of the solution. One primary source of funds for these efforts are US government programs, including USAID (in the State Department) and international development efforts in other federal agencies, including the Departments of Defense and Energy. Other primary sources include United Nations and World Bank. These primary sources must often be matched (or catalyzed) by funding from other donors or international agencies.
The SVM program requires the services of a provider with prior developing world governmental experience who understands how funding is developed within the primary funding agencies, knows the process for accessing the funding, and utilizes the most appropriate methods to understand funding opportunities sufficiently to position CSU to win them.
